As was explained in an article on the Club published in 'Leisure Painter' magazine in April 2001, there is evidence of an active Dorchester Art Club early in the 20th century, but the existing club was set up informally in the early 1950s by a dozen or so amateur artists. Six years later, the expanded club of 25 members was formally created with an annual subscription of half a guinea (then ten shillings and sixpence, now fifty two and a half new pence). The first public exhibition was held in 1958, and a notable high spot in 1971 was a talk by Edward Wesson. After meeting at a variety of locations, the club's eighth and present base is in St Georges Church Hall, Fordington, Dorchester, where members have ample free parking.
Today, the dac caters for both professional and amateur artists who live in and around Dorchester, and who draw and paint in various media, including oils, watercolour, acrylic, pastel and mixed media. Full details of the Club's activities and programme of meetings are set out on the following pages of this website.
Artists of all abilities are welcome to apply for membership at any time: see the "application form" page on this site.
